2024 has been an exciting year for climate politics in the UK, especially due to the number of representatives elected off the back of huge climate promises. Issues that campaigners have been tirelessly raising for years, seem to have been adopted as government policy overnight after the general election; for example, the lifting of the de-facto ban on onshore wind and a cessation of new oil and gas licences are huge wins for the climate movement.
But what happens after the excitement of the election has finished? What has the government done in practice since being elected? And, most importantly for some, what happens to all the promises that the parties made in the run up to the general election? It’s important to be able to hold our politicians accountable for the promises they made and were elected to enact.
Hope for the Future has developed a pledge tracker, a tool to keep track of all the climate and nature promises that the major UK parties made in the run up to the general election. More than this, the resource is a way to monitor the progress that these parties have made on these promises since July 2024. Has a promise seen a lot of progress, with legislation lodged and reviews put in place? Has a pledge seen little real progress but the party in question has been adding their voice to the campaign at Westminster? Or has a commitment been left by the wayside, with no real progress, no real focus given by the MPs, or has the government even publicly ruled it out as an option?
You can find the Pledge Tracker live and free to use on the Hope for the Future website, ready for use by communities and individuals - anyone who is wanting to bring climate and nature into the heart of politics. If you want to reach out to your MP about what the government and major parties have done with the first 100 days of the new parliament, you can use the Pledge Tracker to generate ideas on what you can talk to your MP about and how government action can be pushed to go further and deliver the promises they made.
If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions about the Pledge Tracker, or you want support linking up with your elected representatives and driving the climate conversation further, reach out to Hope for the Future today: info@hftf.org.uk
