Oil Wars: Winning a Just Transition in an Era of Energy Crises

April 23, 2026

5:30-7:00

Join us to hear a range of different campaigning and policy responses to the crisis, and to explore approaches and strategies to take your asks directly to those in power.

Since the war on Iran started, there has been a huge, coordinated and concerted lobbying push on behalf of the fossil fuel industries to cynically use the conflict to advance their agenda. From Rosebank, to Cambo and Jackdaw, local extraction of oil and gas is being held up as the solution to the current energy crisis. And as the cost of living threatens to spiral, these arguments are increasingly gaining purchase.

This is a dangerous time for the fragile transition to a greener economy and society

But it's worth taking a step back, and asking:

🌍 Why would more fossil fuels be the solution to this crisis? Aren’t they making the world more insecure?

🧯 What is the relationship between fossil fuels and conflicts like the current US/Israeli-led war?

📈 Does the burden of a crisis like this have to fall on the most vulnerable members of our society?

🛢️ And if oil and gas from the North Sea would be sold on the global market, why would it help us to secure our own energy independence, or cost of living alleviation?

In times like these, we need to be able to move fast, to adapt to the still unfurling situation, and to continue making the case for a bold, ambitious and systematic just transition away from fossil fuels and towards a real energy security that can allow all humans, as well the planet we rely upon, to flourish

That’s why we’re putting on this crucial event. In the first half we’ll be hearing from campaigners at the heart of these questions, providing us with a range of different campaigning and policy responses to the crisis.

Then in the second half, experts in democratic engagement from Hope for the Future will be exploring a “counter-lobbying approach” to take these asks directly to those in power

A lot is at stake: do we double down on the fossil fuels that are making our societies and economies increasingly fragile and unjust? Or do we seize this opportunity to accelerate the shift to a fairer, greener world?

It's time to stop feeling powerless in the face of never-ending crises and instead to reclaim our democratic system so that it works for the many.

We’ll be updating this page as and when speakers are confirmed, but now is your chance to sign on to this free and crucial workshop to begin taking back power.
